VIWMA Issuing Citations for Illegal Dumping Violations

A 64-gallon trash bin

In May, the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority’s (VIWMA or Authority) environmental enforcement officers issued 26 citations to residents who violated disposal regulations at several bin sites on St. Croix.

Citations were issued for:

  • Leaving household or green waste on the ground instead of depositing it in the bins,
  • Traveling without properly securing waste with a tarp thus allowing trash to be blown into the public streets, including but not limited to,
  • Illegal dumping of used tires.

Illegal dumping carries a $1,000 fine for each violation, and the Authority’s officers will remain vigilant and issue citations to violators. The Authority reminds residents to place trash in the proper place to preserve the natural beauty of the Virgin Islands. The VIWMA will also continue to educate the public on proper disposal methods.

For more information, contact the Office of Communications Management at 513-4171 or email communications@viwma.org.  Also, follow VIWMA on Facebook, LinkedIn and/or Twitter.
