V.I. Water and Power Authority customers will get a credit on their electric bills for May, paid for out of $15 million in federal funds from the CARES Act disaster assistance that became law on March 28.

Credits in the amounts of $250 for residential accounts and $500 for business accounts will be applied to the May billing cycle for all active WAPA accounts. The credit will appear on WAPA bills as a line item that reads “YES Cares Act Credit.”

The credit cannot be converted to cash, and if the credit is not fully used in the May power bill, the remaining amount will be applied to the following month’s bill.

“While this pandemic is impacting our economy, we recognize that our residents and small businesses also are struggling, and we wanted to be able to provide some kind of direct financial assistance to help the community as everyone struggles through these difficult times,” Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. said during a news conference Monday.

For more information, or if you have questions, about the YES stimulus program call WAPA’s Customer Service representatives at 340-774-3552 in the St. Thomas-St. John District or 340-773-2250 in the St. Croix District and choose option 5.
