Two 28-year-old St. Croix men were killed Friday evening in a fatal traffic accident near the Lime Tree Refinery on St. Croix, the V.I. Police reported.
Next of kin identified the driver of the vehicle as Bernard Matthew and the passenger as Derrick Liburd, both 28.
According to the police, at 11:38 p.m. Saturday citizens called 911 reporting a single-vehicle auto crash in the vicinity of the refinery.
Officers from the VIPD Traffic Division, V.I. Fire Service and medical emergency personnel responded and discovered Matthew and Liburd.
Preliminary investigation revealed the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on Hope, passing vehicles, when it lo control in the turn by the main building, impacting the wall then the large boulders causing the vehicle to flip and catch on fire.
Both victims were burnt in the vehicle and died on the scene, the VIPD said.
