V.I. Cycling Race: Parris Wins on Talent, Not Luck

Elite rider David Parris

With a touch of green in his jersey, Elite rider David Parris was the final cyclist to be sent off in Sunday’s St. Paddy’s Day Time Trial. The time trial is known in cycling as the race against the clock whereby racers are sent off on the short course at one-minute intervals, typically with the fastest-known rider in the ultimate position. Parris proved his assigned spot by completing the 12-mile course on St. Croix’s South Shore Road in 31:35. The race started at Junie’s Bar & Restaurant, turned around at Union-Mt. Washington, then finished at the entrance gates to Ha’ Penny.

Top finishers in the Expert category Morgan Theophane(3rd), Wayne Nichols (1st) and Troy Holloway (2nd)

In his first time riding a time trial, triathlete Wayne Nichols held the second fastest overall time in 32:24, which put him in the lead for the Expert category. Elite rider, David Morales, was the third fastest overall participant in a time of 32:42.

With a goal of encouraging more female participation in the VI Cycling Federation events, the race committee was pleased to welcome five women to the race. Catherine Seguin, an endurance runner, who is training for the Tortola Torture on April 13, was the fastest female in a time of 36:42. Her time was good enough for 8th overall. Shari Bashaw, also an ultra-marathoner and triathlete, was second in 39:50. Angela Cherkis was third.

Top finishers in the Sport category: Laverne-Fredericksen (3rd), Elvor Narciss (1st) and James Meyers (2nd)

The next VICF-hosted race will be the Gladfelter’s Classic set for 7 a.m., Sunday, April 7.
