Cause of Fire Unknown Near WAPA Storage Terminal

An investigation is under way by both the V.I. Police Department and V.I. Fire Services into the cause of a fire near the Water and Power Authority LPG storage terminal on St. Croix.

The Source was alerted about the fire by an employee of RG Engineering in Puerto Rico.

WAPA spokesperson Jean Greaux confirmed there was a fire in a parking lot across the street from the LPG storage terminal on St. Croix.

He said, “Two pieces of heavy equipment owned by RG Engineering were destroyed in the fire.”

RG Engineering is a subcontractor of Vitol Inc., the company that is converting WAPA’s generators to run on propane and installing propane storage tanks.

There were no injuries and WAPA’s operations were not compromised, Greaux said.

He said his best guess about when the fire could have occurred is between 1 and 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.
