St. John Man Arrested on Negligent Homicide Charges

Lester Jackson Jr. was arrested Thursday on negligent homicide charges related to a fatal Jan. 10 accident on St. John in which 16-year-old Elvis Smith Jr. died. Police said that Jackson, 26, fell asleep at the wheel of the 1995 Honda Accord he was driving before crashing into a utility pole.

Jackson’s bail was set at $10,000 and he was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending further court action.

Another teen was seriously injured in the 4:56 a.m. accident and was transferred to a mainland medical facility, officials said after the accident. A 22-year-old passenger suffered a head injury.

Smith, the seriously-injured boy and the one with the head injury were in the backseat. Jackson and another 22-year-old were in the front seat and not injured. Emergency responders used the Jaws of Life to extricate the back-seat passengers.

The accident happened on Centerline Road near the Colombo smoothie stand. A cross adorned with purple flowers now stands at the spot where Smith died.
