Coastweeks Kicks off Saturday

The 29th annual Coastweeks runs from Saturday through Oct. 31, and the first events will be held Saturday, the V.I. Waste Management Authority announced in a press release. This year’s theme is Trash Free Seas.

The agency has joined forces with the University of the Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service and the Friends of V.I. National Park to host the events.

On St. Croix, the Good Hope Country Day School will clean up Columbus Landing and St. Joseph High School will clean up Little Bay from 9 to 11 a.m.

The St. Thomas Historical Trust will clean up Hassel Island and the Marine Advisory Service will clean up Brewer’s Bay, both from 9 a.m. to noon.

The cleanup on St. John is at Drunk Bay on Sept. 27.

There are more cleanups scheduled and being scheduled at other beaches throughout the territory until the end of October. Businesses, school groups and other organizations or clubs are encouraged to get involved in the effort to clean up the shorelines.

For more information on the St. Croix activities or to schedule a group for a cleanup, contact Marcia Taylor at UVI at 692-4046. On St. Thomas, call UVI’s Howard Forbes at 513-7203, and on St. John, call Karen Jarvis at the Friends at 779-4940.
