Classroom Collapses at Gomez; Teacher Hospitalized, No Students Injured

One teacher was taken by ambulance to the hospital Monday morning when a classroom collapsed at Joseph Gomez Elementary School, but no students were injured, according to a Department of Education officials on the scene.

Parents streamed toward the elementary school as news of the collapse spread, but were prevented from entering the area.

The collapse occured in a fourth-grade classroom.

Classes were not dismissed. School officials told parents not to come to the school to take their children out of class. A meeting for parents was to be held later in the morning. A mandatory meeting for all parents of Gomez students has been scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

The damaged building houses three classrooms, but only one was affected, according to school officials. Students from the other two classrooms, along with students from the room that collapsed, have been moved to another building where they will be interviewed by Department of Education officials and members of the V.I. Police Department.

According to Education officials, all school counselors on St. Thomas were heading to Gomez to help deal with student trauma.

News of the collapse began spreading before 9 a.m.

Emergency responders on the scene includes Fire Service. Emergency Medical Services and the V.I. Police Department.
