Work will begin Aug. 26 on the V.I. Waste Management Authority’s Cruz Bay wastewater pump station, according to a VIWMA press release Friday. The pump station is located next to the restrooms on the north side of the parking lot across from the post office.
VIWMA spokeswoman Stella Saunders said the $1.2 million project funded by the U.S. Interior Department should take contractor Island Roads a year to complete.
At a meeting held Aug. 2, 2012, Waste Management outlined a series of disruptions to the parking lot. That’s changed.
“I won’t be impacting as much of the parking lot as originally thought,” Saunders said.
While the project will close two parking spaces in front of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building for the duration of the project, Saunders said those using the parking lot can expect some disruptions in the flow of traffic. Many St. John residents use the parking lot for quick trips to the post office as well as long-term parking.
V.I. Waste Management will expand and upgrade the existing facility to meet the increasing demands of the town area. The current facility has been in operation for more than 30 years and has exceeded its useful life. The new facility will prevent failures and spillages from occurring and facilitate more efficient cost savings operations.
This project includes the construction of a new pump station and involves the installation of a sewer force main, gravity sewer lines and manholes, and the elimination of the existing ejector station. The ejector station will be replaced by an automated submerged system with a wet well and standby generator.
The removal and abandonment of the existing infrastructure of existing sewers, excavation, grading, paving, maintenance and protection of existing utilities will also be included in the project.
