Student Employee Appreciation Week Activities Underway on St. Thomas Campus UVI is marking National Student Employee Appreciation Week with a series of activities on the St. Thomas campus. Included are a Career Development Day, today (April 8), an Employment Trivia Day on April 9, a Resume Mechanic Shop on April 10 and a Professional Image Workshop on April 11. The week concludes with the presentation of the 2013 Student Employment Awards from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on Friday, April 12. The awards ceremony, including the naming of the Student Employee of the Year, will take place in the Sports and Fitness Center. Student Employees will also be recognized with Lighter Side Awards.

UVI English Proficiency Exam Set for St. Croix, St. Thomas on April 11 UVI’s English Proficiency Exam (EPE) will be administered on April 11 at UVI.
On the St. Thomas campus the EPE will be given in Rooms 223, 224 and 225 of the Sports and Fitness Center. The exam begins at 8 a.m. Students should bring blue or black ink pens, a dictionary in hard copy and white out, if needed. VI-EPSCoR Conference to Open with Marine Facility Rededication on April 12 The Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR) will launch its annual conference with a rededication of the newly renovated MacLean Marine Science Center, a state-of-the-art facility on the St. Thomas campus of the University of the Virgin Islands, at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 12. The two-day conference will celebrate five years of VI-EPSCoR support for research in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It will feature a presentation by Dr. Jeanne R. Small, the EPSCoR Program Officer at the National Science Foundation. She will provide perspective on large programs nationwide compare with local EPSCoR programs. The public is invited.

Psi Chi Psychology Society to Add 20 New Members on St. Thomas, St. Croix Twenty new members will join the UVI Chapter of the Psi Chi International Honor Society in Psychology during induction ceremonies on the St. Thomas campus on Thursday, April 11, and on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix on Saturday, April 13. The St. Thomas induction is set for 1:30 p.m. in Business 110. On St. Croix, the induction will take place at 4 p.m. in Evans Center Room 401. UVI to Host Free, Public Symposium on ‘Spirituality and Higher Education’ on April 12 UVI’s Center for the Study of Spirituality and Professionalism (CSAP) will offer a free symposium on "Spirituality and Higher Education" from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 12. The symposium, which is open to the public, will be held in the first-floor conference room of UVI’s Administration and Conference Center on the St. Thomas campus, with a videoconference link to Evans Center Room 401 on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix.
The symposium is designed to provide an academic platform that allows for open dialogue between students, faculty, administration and professionals in the field of spirituality and higher education. It will consist of informational materials, interactive sessions followed by question-and-answer opportunities, panel discussions and more. A continental breakfast and lunch will be served.
The symposium’s featured speakers will be Dr. Kathy Ann Hernandez of Eastern University, Dr. Marla Frederick of Harvard University, Dr. Safiya George Dalmida of Emory University and Dr. Chenzira Kahina of the University of the Virgin Islands.

UVI Spring Concert to Feature St. Thomas Campus Student Ensemble Groups on April 14 The UVI Music Department will present a Spring Concert on the St. Thomas campus lawn near the Recreation Center at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 14. The concert, which is free, will feature performing ensembles including the Concert Band, the Concert Choir, the Steel Pan Ensemble and the Jazz Ensemble. Wellness Week Planned for UVI Community on St. Thomas Campus April 15-19 The UVI Health Services office will conduct Wellness Week from April 15 to 19, on the St. Thomas campus. “Your Health Is Your Priority” is the theme. A variety of tests and screenings – blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, body mass index (BMI) measurements and health counseling – are planned by appointment from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. To make appointments contact the Employee Benefits Office at (340) 693-1429. Wellness coaches from Health insurance provider CIGNA will also be on hand for consultations. A forum on alcohol addiction is slated from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17. (See next item.)
The Health Services Center will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 18. A gynecological clinic for students only will be offered from 8 a.m. to noon. On Friday, April 19, vision testing for students only is scheduled at the Health Services Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Forum on ‘Alcohol: the Silent Addiction’ Slated April 15 on St. Thomas Campus UVI’s Division of Counseling and Placement, Health Services Department, and the Psychology Student Association on St. Thomas will host a forum entitled "Alcohol: the Silent Addiction" at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, in the Administration and Conference Center. The forum is being organized in recognition of Alcohol Awareness Month.
The forum is designed to help increase awareness and knowledge of the pervasive impact that alcohol, alcoholism and alcohol related problems have on individuals, their friends, families and the community. The panelists will be psychologist Dr. Sheena Walker and Lieutenant Rosalyn Jarvis, Traffic Commander at the Virgin Islands Police Department.

UVICELL to Offer Course in Basic Computing Beginning April 15 UVI’s Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVICELL) Center is conducting registration for its upcoming Basic Computing course. Classes will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. every Monday and Thursday, starting April 15. All sessions will be held at the UVICELL Center on the St. Thomas Campus.
The course is designed for individuals interested in learning the basics of using a computer. Participants will learn the essentials of computing such as working with windows, using the Internet, emailing, safe computing and more. The information will be presented in an easy to understand format and will includes hands-on exercises.

UVI to Host Annual Autism Conference April 17 on St. Thomas, April 18 on St. Croix The Virgin Islands’ 6th Annual Autism Conference will feature presentations by an expert from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and one of the nation’s top children’s hospitals. Conference sessions are scheduled at the University of the Virgin Islands for April 17, on St. Thomas, and April 18, on St. Croix.
The conference is designed to help Virgin Islanders develop a better understanding of what autism is and what best practices are in use for dealing with it, according to Dr. Charles H. Beady. Dr. Beady is the acting executive director of the Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, which is organizing the event in collaboration with the Virgin Islands Autism Network.
Conference sessions will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at each location. The St. Thomas session will take place in the UVI Administration and Conference Center. On St. Croix, it will be held in the Great Hall on the Albert A. Sheen Campus. Lunch will be provided. Advanced registration is required.

UVI Alumni Association Issues Call for Alumni Trustee Nominations The UVI Alumni Association has issued a call for nominations for the position of Alumni Trustee. Alumni Trustees serve a three year term. To be eligible, a nominee:
• shall be a graduate of the University of the Virgin Islands with a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree.
• shall have on record active membership in a Chapter of the UVI Alumni Association including the payment of annual/lifetime dues and also the giving of financial contributions to the University of the Virgin Islands for at least three years prior to applying for this nomination. In lieu of the three-year financial contributions to UVI, the nominee can pay to the University, $100.00 per year, for each outstanding year at the time his/her application is submitted.

7th Annual Read on the Green Community Day Slated at UVI on April 20 The University of the Virgin Islands Libraries, in conjunction with the St. Thomas-St. John Library Association, will host the 7th Annual Read on the Green Community Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, on the UVI golf course. The day will feature storytelling by Senator Tregenza Roach, an open-mic session for poetry, short stories and feedback on libraries and literacy. Also planned are reading sessions on the green, face painting and art sessions allowing young readers to create paintings depicting their favorite books or favorite places on the island. The Public Library Bookmobile will also be on hand. A book giveaway and hourly raffles for book gift certificates and other prizes are scheduled.
Community members are encouraged to bring their family, a blanket and picnic lunch and join in an afternoon of fun.

Miss UVI Competition Now Set for April 21 on St. Croix The 33rd Miss UVI Ambassadorial Competition is set for 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, at the St. Croix Educational Complex. Miss UVI pre-pageant interviews will take place from 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, at UVI’s Student Center on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. UVI Voices of Inspiration Community Choir Offers Three Shows on St. Croix April 13-14 The UVI Voices of Inspiration Community Choir will present three shows titled a “Musical Journey Through Time” at the Great Hall on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix on Saturday and Sunday, April 13 and 14. The first show is at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Two shows – at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. – are slated for Sunday.
The choir is composed of 45 UVI students, alumni and staff, as well as V.I. community members and potential students. It is directed by Josephine Thomas-Lewis. Dr. Priscilla Williams is the choir advisor. The program will feature a wide variety of tunes, including classical, jazz and Negro spirituals.
