V.I. police will man a traffic checkpoint Saturday at an undisclosed location in the St. Croix District, hoping to cut down on drunk driving and reduce traffic deaths and injuries.
A news release, issued Friday by V.I. Police Public Information Officer Melody Rames, said, "Members of our community have been involved in auto accidents on roadways by persons driving under the influence. DUI traffic checkpoints … are done in an effort to reduce those auto accidents, as well as insuring that drivers are operating their vehicles responsibly."
The DUI traffic checkpoint is a proven and effective method for achieving this goal, the department’s release noted. By publicizing enforcement and education efforts, the department believes motorists can be deterred from driving under the influence.
Traffic volume and weather permitting, drivers who appear to be intoxicated will be given a sobriety test. Those found in violation will be ticketed and could be arrested.
In addition, the statement said, "Our objective is to send a clear message to those who are operating vehicles without a valid driver’s license and/or unregistered vehicles."
