Governor John P. deJongh Jr. has proclaimed October 7-14, 2012 as “Fire Prevention Week” in the Virgin Islands to encourage all the territory’s residents to think about fire safety practices, and plan and practice their fire escape routes.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has designated the 2012 theme: “It’s Fire Prevention Week, Have Two Ways Out,” which encourages families to prioritize fire escape planning and practice. The Virgin Islands Fire Service is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in or visiting our territory.
“Fire Safety Week is a chance for all of us to make sure we have thought about not only what practices help us avoid fires, but also what we would do in a fire or other emergency to safely remove our families from danger,” de Jongh said.
The annual observance of Fire Safety Week is held to teach life-safety lessons, increase public awareness of the dangers and hazards of fires, and emphasize the importance of fire safety. This includes the installation of fire safety devices to help our youngest to our seniors in the event of a fire and to help make a lifelong difference for the people in our community.
