Register for Free or Low-Cost Mammograms

The American Cancer Society is offering free and low-cost mammograms to both men and women over the age of 40 in conjunction with National Breast Cancer Awareness month. The organization has 250 vouchers to hand out across the territory.

“It’s first come, first served,” American Cancer Society Director Lorraine Baa said. Distributing the vouchers began Sept. 3.

Women and men over age 40 with no insurance are eligible for the free mammograms. The American Cancer Society pays the deductible for those with insurance.

American Cancer Society community representative Christine Aubain said that if those with high-deductible insurance policies indicate this when they sign up, they will receive a no-cost voucher.

Women with a family history of breast cancer who are under age 40 are also eligible. “As long as they have a doctor’s referral,” Aubain said.

Those requesting vouchers must provide identification.

Register on St. Thomas at the American Cancer Society office, Suite 108 of the Medical Foundation building near Roy L. Schneider Hospital, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Register on St. Croix at the American Cancer Society office on the second floor of the Sunny Isles shopping center from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Register on St. John at the St. John Community Foundation office from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays. The Foundation office is on the third floor of the Marketplace Shopping Center. If you can’t make the Thursday time frame, Community Foundation Director Celia Kalousek said call the office at 693-9410 and she’ll schedule an appointment.

Vouchers are redeemable between Oct. 1 and 31.

St. Thomas and St. John residents will receive mammograms at St. Thomas Radiology or Roy L. Schneider Hospital.

Those on St. Croix get their mammograms at the Imaging Center.

The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community- based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem through research, education, advocacy and service.
