Jeffery Daniel Brown Dies at 47

Jeffery Daniel Brown
Jeffery Daniel Brown was born on Oct. 2, 1964, in Houston, Texas, to Jim and Dixie Brown. He died July 10. The family lived for a time in Texas where his father was a computer programmer and his mother a nurse till moving to Illinois when Jeff was a child. Jeff was a big help on his grandfather’s cattle farm as well as spending time in the garden with his grandmother. Most of his cousins, aunts and uncles are still in southern Illinois.
As a young man, Jeff lived in Boulder, Colorado, before making a move with his dog to St. Croix in 1987. From there he relocated to St. John to aid in the reconstruction effort after Hurricane Marilyn. Later he took part in the construction of many fine homes on the island. He was skilled in masonry with an ability to frame up anything.
Beginning in 1996, Jeff assisted in the care of the horses, donkeys, goats and other residents of the Carolina Corral. Together he and the Dana took in animals who needed homes, some as rescues and others no longer wanted by their owners. He had a natural love toward animals and would do what it took to meet there needs. If there weren’t enough horses for everyone to ride in a trail ride he would walk the ride, sometimes twice a day.
His favorite pastimes were reading, listening to the local bands, and visiting with anybody and everybody he met. Many were impressed with his knowledge of various subjects. He was quick to lend his assistance when he could. His laughter was contagious and his smile genuine. Jeff is survived by his parents and an older sister, Michele Gillespie, and her daughter, Delani. An older brother passed away previously, James or "Jimmy Brown," leaving a daughter, Kirstin Brown.
A funeral is being planned for Jeff on Tuesday, Aug. 14, at the Lutheran Church, Cruz Bay, St. John, at 9 a.m. Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home.
