Both Allison Peter and Laverne Jones-Ferrette on Monday qualified for the semifinals of the woman’s 200-meter run at London’s Olympic Games, although they were not mentioned at anytime during the TV broadcast of the preliminary heats.
Anyone watching NBC’s coverage of the Olympics Monday night saw Jones-Ferrette run but the network didn’t bother to give her name. In fact, Jones-Ferrette took second in the preliminary heat that was won by American Sanya Richards-Ross, the only name NBC bothered to report on in the race.
Ferrette Jones almost beat Richards-Ross, getting nipped at the wire. The American ran the heat in 22.48 seconds, and Ferrette-Jones trailed by a fraction of a second, finishing in 22.64 seconds.
Peter finished fourth in her heat, trailing Murielle Aboure of Cte d’Ivoire, Aleksandra Fedoriva of Russia and Margaret Adeoye of Great Britain. But her time of 23 second flat was good enough to propel her into the semifinals, which will be held Tuesday. But NBC did not even show that heat because there were no Americans running in it.
Also Tuesday, the V.I.’s Muhammad Halim will represent the territory in the triple jump prelims.
