Employees of Frederiksted Health Care Inc. will be conducting free blood pressure screenings and collecting food donations for My Brother’s Table this Wednesday at Plaza Extra West. The event is the kickoff for a string of activities the group is planning in honor of National Health Center Week.
FHC runs the Ingeborg Nesbitt Clinic, and Chief Executive Officer Masserae Sprauve Webster said the week is a chance to give back to those who utilize the clinic’s services, with special attention paid to farmers, the homeless and those who live in housing projects.
FHC employees will be collecting food and screening for high blood pressure throughout the day Wednesday.
On Monday, the clinic will hold an interdenominational gathering in its lobby at 8:15 and continue its food drive through noon.
On Aug. 7, FHC will throw a block party on Strand Street in front of the clinic from 1 to 7 p.m. There will be free health screenings, games, face painting, food, a bouncing castle and a coloring competition for the kids.
On Aug. 8, the organization will prepare and serve a free breakfast at the vegetable market in Frederiksted, starting at 7:30 a.m. Employees will also volunteer at My Brother’s Table later that day, handing out lunches at noon.
On Aug. 9, employees will conduct free health screenings at the farmer’s market at the Department of Agriculture complex. Farmers can get screened starting at 7:30 a.m. with the service opening to the general public from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
On Aug. 10, FHC employees will conduct a beach cleanup in Frederiksted between the fish market and the pool. The clinic is closed on this day.
The week of activity ends Aug. 11 with a final food drive for My Brother’s Table at Plaza Extra West.
Webster said the activities are a way to give back while at the same time putting the clinic in the public eye
“The hope is that the community will then utilize our services,” she said.
Webster said many people mistakenly believe that the clinic is only for the indigent or the uninsured, when in reality it is for everyone. She also stressed that services are offered on a sliding scale for those who may have trouble affording healthcare.
The Ingeborg Nesbitt Clinic is located on Strand Street in Frederiksted. The clinic provides primary care as well as gynecology, nephrology, podiatry, ophthalmology, optometry and dental services.
