One lucky family on St. Thomas/St. John and one family on St. Croix will win an exterior home makeover in a Regenerating Our Community contest sponsored by the Housing Finance Authority.
The deadline for entries on St. Croix is Friday.
The deadline on St. Thomas/St. John is June 29.
Finance Authority Director Adrienne L. Williams said in a press release that the home makeover contest is a reflection of the community’s efforts to help someone in need.
The contest, held in conjunction with National Home Ownership Month, is open to all owners of single family, owner-occupied units.
Project administrator Rometa Dorsey said that the homes did not have to be acquired through HFA efforts.
The winners will receive an exterior home makeover including minor cosmetics, landscaping, and scrape and paint jobs. Dorsey said cosmetic improvements can include things like new doors and window trim.
Labor for the “Regenerating Our Community” home makeover contest is being donated by Precise Builders on St. Thomas and Jerome Matthews on St. Croix.
“Our agency is humbled by the outpouring of support from businesses and nonprofits that have donated their services during Housing Month for such worthy causes,” Williams said.
Dorsey said it would be impossible to put a value on the improvements since every house would be different. “But it will be in the thousands,” she said.
The public is also asked to participate by nominating an elderly, handicapped, disabled or other deserving homeowner to win.
“Or a family member fallen on hard times,” Dorsey said, adding that homeowners can also nominate themselves.
To nominate a member of the community, residents must include a written essay of 75 words or less describing why the homeowner should win the contest. They must also include a photo of the home.
The St. Croix winner’s name will be drawn at the 2012 Housing Expo held Saturday at the St. Croix Central High School Gymnasium.
The St. Thomas winner will be drawn at the June 30 Housing Expo at the Mark C. Marin Center at Antilles School.
Both events run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Winners or their representative must be present at the time of the drawing to claim the prize.
