Carjacking Earns Man 7-Year Sentence

Senior District Court Judge Raymond Finch sentenced Jared James, 19, to a mandatory seven years in prison Thursday for using a firearm during a carjacking, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Friday.

Finch also sentenced James to three years of supervised release and ordered him to pay $2,800 in restitution.

In March, James pleaded guilty to using a firearm during a crime of violence.

According to the plea documents filed with the court, James used a firearm to steal a car from a woman in October 2011 at the Pickled Greek restaurant on St. Croix. Police later found the car near Halfpenny Beach in a damaged condition.

The case was investigated by the Virgin Islands Police Department and the FBI. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rhonda Williams-Henry.
