Buck Island Holds 50th Anniversary 2012 Lecture Series

In celebration of Buck Island Reef’s 50th anniversary year as a National Monument, the National Park Service continues its public lectures about Buck Island Reef National Monument on every second Thursday of each month.
May’s lecture, entitled “Do’s and Don’ts a Buck Island Reef National Monument: Perspectives on Marine Safety” will be held from 5-6 p.m. on Thursday, May 10, in the Danish Guinea West India Company Warehouse/ Slave Market Building. This month’s lecture will include members of the National Park Service’s Law Enforcement staff. They will discuss the general rules that they enforce as part of the National Park Service’s dual mission provide a safe recreational experience in the presence of protected natural and cultural resources. These include how local and federal agencies work together at Buck Island to achieve these goals.
The Christiansted National Historic Site parking lot will be ‘free’ and open for this event until 7 p.m.

Oct. 11 Ups and Downs of Buck Island’s Coral Health
Nov. 8 Buck Island’s Ancient Peoples-Seen and Unseen
Dec. 13 The Rare and Unknown of Buck Island’s Marine Life
