Hashish Washes Up on St. Croix Beach

A package containing 63.5 pounds of hashish in individual bricks washed up Saturday on a beach near Grapetree Bay on St. Croix’s East End, the Police Department said in a press release issued Tuesday. St. Croix Police Chief Christopher Howell said the drugs have a street value of just under $600,000.

Howell said he received an anonymous call at about 10 a.m. Saturday that a package was on the beach near Grapetree Bay and could possibly contain drugs. Officers recovered the package from the beach and brought it to forensic technicians who weighed the package and opened it.

Howell said a small sample of the drugs will be set off to a federal forensic lab in hopes of determining where it was processed.

The remainder of the drugs will be incinerated, Howell said.
