Runners, joggers and walkers will race Sunday in Frederiksted to launch Crime Victims Rights Week, observed from Sunday through Saturday.
The race is the first of a series events planned on all three islands by the Department of Human Services’ Criminal Victims Compensation Commission.
This year’s theme, "Reshape the Future by Honoring Our Past," reflects the commission’s intent to educate the community about the services available to crime victims and to curb violence in the territory.
- Sunday, the 2nd annual Race Against Crime and Violence will take place at the Ann Abrahmson Pier in Frederiksted, starting at 5 p.m. Awards will be given to top overall finishers, age group winners and special category winners. Participants are welcome to walk, jog or run. Race day registration will be open from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on the day of the event.
- A free symposium on Restorative Justice is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, at Administration Building of the University of the Virgin Islands’ St. Thomas campus. The guest speaker is N. Saleem Hylton, an internationally recognized Restorative/Community Justice trainer.
- Victims of crime will be honored at a vigil entitled “Victim No More,” which will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday in Cruz Bay on St. John. Various community stakeholders will present ideas and materials to end victimization in our community and welcome discussion about issues plaguing the community.
