Winless Dirty Dozen Shocks Softball Inc.

Set It Off ace Julio Carmona pitched his team to victory over a tough Diageo Hummers squad.After a week of inaction due to field repairs, the Bob Owens Slow Pitch Softball league resumed play with a bang on Monday at the D.C. Canegata Ball Park. The previously winless Dirty Dozen squad, coming in with a record of 0-12, finally got in the win column with a 14-13 shocking upset victory over the powerful Softball Inc. team.

In the night’s other games, the Coolers made short work of Anchor Dive, 15-5, in game two and in another upset victory, Set It Off out slugged the Diageo Hummers, 20-17, in game three.

Dirty Dozen 14, Softball Inc. 13
The Dirty Dozen removed the winless nomenclature from their name with the shocking 14-13 upset victory in game one on Monday. With the entire ballpark staunchly behind them, cheering for the upset victory, the Dozen got a game-winning RBI, walk-off single from catcher Dave Wentz in the bottom of the seventh inning to leave Softball Inc. on the field.

They scored 14 runs on 12 hits and two errors, while Softball Inc. had 13 runs on nine hits and four errors. Jason Roberts got the win on the hill for the Dozen, while Cody St. Pierre got the loss. Top batters for the winners were Mikr Pede (4 for 4 with two RBIs) and Jeff Elvins (3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs). Wentz had only one hit for the night but it was a game winner. For Softball Inc., Antonio Cruz was 4 for 4 with three home runs and seven RBIs, and Fernando Quesada was 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs.

Coolers 15, Anchor Dive 5
The Coolers roughed up Anchor Dive in game two via the 10-run mercy rule, 15-5, in five innings. It was the Coolers with 15 runs on 12 hits and three errors, while Anchor Dive finished with five runs on eight hits and three errors. The winning pitcher was Dexter DeSouza, and Edwin Sankitts got the loss. Top batters for the Coolers were Eric Perez and Alberto Medina who were both 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs. For Anchor Dive, Nicholas Miller was 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs, and Carmelo Torres went 1 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs.

Set It Off 20, Hummers 17
Set it Off surprisingly outslugged the Diageo Hummers 20-17 in Monday’s late game, as yet another of the league’s upper echelon teams got bitten by the upset bug. It was Set it Off with 20 runs on 18 hits and three errors, while the Hummers finished with 17 runs on 16 hits and two errors.

The winning pitcher was Julio Carmona, and Roman Cruz got the loss. Top batters for the winners were Enercido Bon (2 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs) and Jose Burgos (2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs). For the Hummers, Kai Schjang was 4 for 4 with two home runs and five RBIs, and Sylvester Blake was 2 for 4 with two home runs and three RBIs.
