Daren Stevens pitched three innings of no-hit baseball while striking out eight batters, as his Suns burned the Reds 11-1 in five innings Saturday afternoon in Elmo Plaskett 13-15, big league baseball action at the D.C. Canegata ball park.
Stevens struck out the side in two of his three innings before turning things over to reliever Christopher Joseph.
The Reds lone run came on a passed ball in the top of the fourth inning.
The Suns scored their runs in the first, third and fourth innings.
In the first inning they opened the scoring for the game when Elijah Felix scored on an error by the Reds shortstop.
After failing to score in the second, the Suns scored all the runs they would need for the game in the bottom of the fourth, plating three runs to take a 4-0 lead on a passed ball and two bases-loaded walks drawn by Joseph and Pedro Gonzalez.
After the Reds finally scored their lone run of the game in the top of the fourth inning, the Suns capitalize mightily on the wildness of the Reds pitching in their half of the inning, plating seven runs for an 11-1 lead. They scored their seven runs on three walks, two hit batsmen, and three RBI singles by Felix, Arthur Hector and DeJohn Hardy.
Suns pitching combined for 11 strikeouts while giving up just one hit. Joseph who pitched the fifth inning, got the win for the Suns, while Jose Berrios took the loss for the Reds. Top batters for the Suns were Felix, 2 for 3 with an RBI; Hector, 1 for 3 with an RBI; and Hardy 1 for 2 with an RBI. For the Reds Sauline Saldana was 1 for 3.
In the day’s early game, the Yankees and the Pirates played to a three-all tie after their allotted time for the game ran out. The Pirates scored three runs on two hits while the Yankees plated three runs on just one hit while committing three errors. Top batter for the Pirates was Jose Martinez, 1 for 2 with a home run and an RBI. For the Yankees Evanston Mathew was 1 for 2 with an RBI.
