Brief: Hovensa to Add Personnel in Coming Months

The Hovensa oil refinery is getting ready to add 91 new employees to its payroll after June 7, according to a statement from the Labor Department.
Job openings have been posted with the V.I. Department of Labor for the following trades: boiler makers, millwrights, pipefitters, valve technicians, welders, machinists, instrument technicians, electricians, and supervisors.
According to the release, the added personnel will reduce Hovensa’s need for services provided by Turner St. Croix Maintenance, an industrial contractor that provides an array of services to the refinery.
Although Hovensa may fill most of these positions by hiring workers presently employed by Turner, that is not guaranteed. This action will not result in a plant closing or in a mass layoff, according to Labor, and Turner employees have been informed.
According to the department’s statement, Labor is ready to work with those who want to apply for these positions along with those at Turner who may be affected by this action.
For more information, contact the Labor Department’s Sunny Isles offices on St. Croix at (340) 773-1440.
