The student body of the St. Croix Educational Complex will present a check for money they have raised for the St. Croix Foundation for Haiti Disaster Relief to Education Commissioner Dr. La Verne Terry at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 12, at the school. Principal Kurt Vialet, flanked by coordinators of the student driven effort, will present the check written in the amount of $4,800.
The Complex drive brings donations from Department of Education personnel and students to a grand total of $29,412.33. Other donations included approximately $3,000 from Charlotte Amalie High School and $5,000 from the Julius Sprauve School. Sprauve raised $2,500, which was matched by local businesses on St. John. Additionally, Gladys Abraham Elementary collected canned goods and clothing in addition to raising monies for the relief effort.
Recognizing the need to provide assistance to the people devastated by the January 12th earthquake in Haiti, Commissioner Terry challenged personnel, students and their families to step up and make a difference through the donation of a single dollar each to the relief effort. In addition to donating monies, several employees manned the telephones during the recent Territorial Haiti Relief Telethon (Jan. 31) coordinated by the Office of the Governor and WTJX. Donated performances by the Encore Band, led by the Education’s Territorial Director of Instructional Technology, and Spectrum Band, which is also comprised of Education personnel, rounded off the line up of performances at the six hour telethon.
