Virgin Islands Police officers will be on the road through Monday, cracking down on drunken drivers over the Labor Day Weekend.
As of Friday, 12 drivers have been arrested on St. Croix and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol since the "Over the Limit, Under Arrest" crackdown began Aug. 21.
Officers will continue to be out in full force through Monday’s Labor Day observance in their attempt to keep the roads safe.
Police Commissioner Designee Novelle E. Francis Jr. said traffic checkpoints are preventative measures the department takes to keep the roads safe.
“Even with our limited resources traffic stops are an effective way to combat other crimes,” he said.
The dozen drivers arrested on St. Croix, and their ages, since the crackdown began are: Michael James, 30; Jose Cabaga, 51; Patrick Quinn, 32; Conrad Victorine 51; Francis Justin 57; Luis Beceril 32; Haden Blackman 54; Abraham Reynolds54; Simon Francis 60; Morriston Martin, 68; Martin Hope, 47; and Darrell Mestier, 57.
No DUI arrests have been reported on St. Thomas since the crackdown began.
However on Aug. 23, two days after the crackdown began, 34-year-old Tena Dudley, who was visiting St. John from Florida, was killed when she was ejected from the rear seat of the vehicle. Police said the driver, 45-year-old William Dabey of Estate Glucksberg was under the influence of alcohol when the accident happened.
