The St. Croix Landmarks Society, a historical and cultural organization, is looking for traditional artisans for cultural events. It seeks craftspeople who can continue and help be bearers of St. Croix history and culture.
They are particularly interested in:
- Basketry, rugs and fiber mats
- Pottery
- Carnival and masquerade masks
- Needlework
- Fishtraps, nets and boats
- Traditional jewelry
- Musical instruments straw goods (hats, table mats, bags)
- Toys, coconut art, puppets and dolls
- Wood work
- Wrought ironwork
- Other traditional Virgin Islands art
SCLS will call upon these artisans for a number of events, activities and workshops. The first event will be a “Cultural Fair at Whim Museum,” featuring local arts, crafts and food. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Aug. 22, which is a cruise ship day, and will offer vetted, traditional crafts booths. Admission will be $5 and include open house at the Whim Museum Greathouse, a petting zoo, storytelling, childrens’ activities, artist demonstrations and a traditional food fair.
Traditional artisans will be kept on file for other events as well, such as educational workshops and Starving Artists Fairs.
