Wyatt Heat, Hummers Survive Slugfests; Speak the Word Hammers Softball Inc.

April 21, 2009 — Wyatt Heat and the National Guard Hummers survived in two high-scoring Bob Owens playoff games Monday night at the D.C. Canegata Ballpark, while Speak the Word hammered Softball Inc. in a mild upset. The Heat knocked off Anchor Dive 16-13, the Hummers beat the Cartel 27-21 and Speak the Word was 10 runs better than Softball Inc., whipping them 14-4.
Wyatt Heat 16, Anchor Dive 13
The defending champions, Wyatt Heat, continued their playoff run with an exciting 16-13 victory over Anchor Dive in game one Monday. It was the Heat with 16 runs on 18 hits and three errors, while Anchor Dive finished with 13 runs on 15 hits and four errors. James Smith got the win on the hill for the Heat, while Edwin Sankitts got the loss. Top batters for the Heat were Dexter Desouza, 3 for 4 with two home runs and six RBIs, and Smith, 2 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs. For Anchor Dive, Danny Rodriguez went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs and Danny Rosa went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs.
Hummers 27, Cartel 21
Game two Monday saw the National Guard Hummers and the Cartel score 48 total runs in a shootout. The Hummers plated 27 runs on 22 hits with three errors, while the Cartel scored 21 runs on 18 hits and had three errors. Hummers ace Jerry Vialet was the winning pitcher, while Nigel Atwell got the loss for the Cartel. Top hitters for the Hummers were Mario Christian, 4 for 4 with three home runs and nine RBIs, and Sylvester Blake, 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. For the Cartel, Kenny Milligan went 4 for 5 with two home runs and five RBIs, and Daren Lewis went 4 for 5 with three home runs and five RBIs.
Speak the Word Ministries 14, Softball Inc. 4
In Monday's nightcap, Speak the Word Ministries, in a mild upset, surprised Softball Inc 14-4. Softball Inc., who finished second in the regular season, was considered one of the top contenders for the 2009 Bob Owens Slow Pitch Softball League crown, but has had a tough going in the playoffs. Speak the Word had 14 runs on 18 hits and three errors, while Softball Inc. finished with four runs on nine hits and two errors. Sylvester McIntosh got the win on the hill for Speak the Word, and Cody St. Pierre got the loss. Dexter Skepple led the Speak the Word attack at the plate, going 3 for 4 with two home runs and six RBIs on the night. He was ably supported by teammate Kareem Dennis, who went 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. For Softball Inc., St. Pierre went 2 for 3 with a home run and one RBI and Antonio Cruz went 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
