Salty Sailors, 40 Caliber Knocked Out Of Playoffs; Stealers Take Loss

April 19, 2009 — The Bob Owens playoffs continued Thursday night at the D.C. Canegata Ball Park with three scheduled games. In game one, the Salty Sailors were sent home for the season by Wyatt Heat 14-9 after losing their second game of the double elimination tournament. Claudio Enterprises beat the Seaborne Stealers 23-18 in a battle of unbeaten teams in the second contest, and Speak the Word sent home 40 Caliber, 14-9, in the nightcap in a loser’s bracket battle.
Wyatt Heat 23, Salty Sailors 12
The Heat ended the Salty Sailors 2009 softball season in game one on Thursday, defeating them by a score of 23-12. It was the Heat with 23 runs on 18 hits and three errors, while the Salty Sailors finished with 12 runs on 15 hits and four errors. James Smith was the winning pitcher while Rod Graci got the loss for the Sailors. Top batters for the Heat were Jose Berrios, 4 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs, and Angel Sosa, 4 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs. For Salty Sailors, Jay Audio was 5 for 5 with two RBIs and Denny Denton was 3 for 4 with two RBIs.
Claudio Enterprises 23, Seaborne Stealers 18
In game two on Thursday, Claudio outgunned the Stealers squad, 23-18, behind the steady pitching of ace Julio Carmona. Although undermanned, the Stealers were in this contest to the very end, but an uncharacteristic eight errors were just too much for them to overcome against a team as good as Claudio. Claudio finished with 23 runs on 18 hits and three errors while the Stealer had 18 runs on 15 hits while committing eight errors. Sam Ramos, the Stealers ace, was his steady self in a losing effort as his usually staunch defense was rather porous on Thursday. Top batters for Claudio were Miguel Rodriguez, 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs, and Juan Santana, 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs. For the Stealers, Owen Pimentel was 3 for 4 with two home runs and five RBIs and Eustace Davis was 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs.
Speak the Word 14, 40 Caliber 9
Thursday’s nightcap was a win-or-go-home contest for Speak the Word and 40 Caliber, and when the dust cleared it was 40 Caliber sent packing until next season by a score of 14-9. Speak the Word had 14 runs on 12 hits and three errors while 40 Caliber finished with nine runs on 11 hits and two errors. Steve Nisky got the win on the hill for Speak the Word while Howard Forbes got the loss for 40 Caliber. Top hitters for the winners were Norbert Pickering, 3 for 3 with a home run and five RBIs and John Bell, 2 for 3 with a home run and five RBIs. For 40 Caliber, Gabriel Jagroup was 3 for 3 with a home run and one RBI and Robert Settles was 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs.
