UVI Announces Afternoon on the Green Winners

March 30, 2009 – The University of the Virgin Islands announces the winners of the food competition of the 20th Annual Afternoon on the Green held on March 8, on the St. Thomas campus golf course.
Sonia Castro, who for years has donated unique cakes for the event, took first place in the pastries and sweets category for her red velvet cake. Her pistachio cake and carrot cake also tied with Devery Phipps’ bread pudding for third place in that category.
“Brigo’s Firehouse Salmon,” prepared by Arthur Raymo III, won first place in the seafood category for the fourth consecutive year. “Ed’s Goat Water” jumped from third place last year to take first place in the 2009 soups category.
The food was judged by a group of 18 judges consisting of UVI faculty and alumni, restaurant chefs and volunteers. Afternoon on the Green Chairperson Peggy Smith thanked the entire community for its support over the years. Please see the complete list of winners below.
