March 14, 2009 — The Darby Martinez Memorial Handicap will highlight a seven-race card on Sunday at the Randall “Doc” James Race Track. The race will feature six native bred thoroughbreds going a distance of six furlongs for a purse of $3,500.
Emerald Star (116) should be considered the early favorite in this race after beating most of these same horses last time out. He of course will be strongly challenged by Tristitct (114) and Fightforyourrights (118), who did not do too badly in their last efforts on the track. Also entered in the race is the well bred Prince Crystal (116), Dana’s Express (114, and Them Ah Talk (114).
Unfortunately for many race fans the fastest rising star in native thoroughbreds racing, Something Else Special, was scratched from the race. He has been on a tear of late and many wanted to see him take on the older horses.
The sixth race for top imports should also be a good one as Green Sand, coming off a huge win last race day, will carry a top weight of 119 pounds as he takes on a field of four other thoroughbreds trying to find their way back to the winners circle going a distance of seven furlongs. Emilin (115), Formerly Cat (115), and Crafty Smile (115) should show early speeds in this race and if Green Sand should get into a speed duel with any of those three, the race could set up for a late run by Black Jack Bob (115) for the upset.
