St. Thomas Company Training for Green Jobs

March 2, 2009 — With the country going green to conserve energy, a St. Thomas renewable-energy company has launched a program to train people for those jobs.
"We're actively recruiting," said Jamila Harris, Eagle's energy consultant and lead trainer.
Eagle Energy is looking for middle and high school students to participate in a year-round after-school internship program, apprentices who are above high school age, and people for on-the-job training with electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and general-construction skills.
"I want there to be an option for people," Harris said.
The economic downturn is putting people out of work, and people can be trained to work in renewable-energy-related fields, he said.
"We need to create new jobs now in anticipation of potential job losses in our community in the near future," Harris said. "We cannot absorb high levels of unemployment here in the Virgin Islands, such as what has happened on the U.S. mainland."
Eagle Energy sells renewable-energy products and conducts energy assessments of homes and businesses. The company is certified by the V.I. Energy Office to participate in its rebate program.
Energy Office spokesman Don Buchanan could not be reached for comment.
