May 30, 2008 – The University of the Virgin Islands has announced that University of Tampa head volleyball coach Chris Catanach will conduct an advanced volleyball clinic from June 23-26 at UVI's Sports and Fitness Center. Catanach, who led the UT Spartans volleyball team to the NCAA Division II championship in 2006, will also assist with the preparation of UVI volleyball teams for the upcoming season.
The UVI clinic is geared towards advanced male and female volleyball players ages 12 to 24. It will also allow high school student-athletes to showcase and develop their skills. Scholarship opportunities are available for high school seniors interested in playing intercollegiate volleyball at UVI.
Registration will be available for the clinic starting at 2 p.m., on both June 18 and 19, in the lobby of the Sports and Fitness Center. The clinic officially begins on Monday, June 23, with daily sessions running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost of the four-day clinic is $175.
Catanach, who was born in the U.S.V.I., is in his 24th season in charge of the Spartans. During that time he has built one of the elite volleyball programs in the country, earning 15 Sunshine State Conference titles, 21 NCAA playoff appearances, 10 trips to the Elite 8, two national runner-up finishes and the 2006 NCAA title. The Spartans are also the 2007 NCAA South Regional Champions. He has been selected the American Volleyball Coaches Association's South Region Coach of the Year 11 times, including the past three consecutive years. He has compiled a record of 749 wins and 145 losses at Tampa, including an impressive 31-3 season in 2007. His 2007 squad earned three All-American selections and one All-American honorable mention.
