Oct. 9, 2007 — The long discussed Long Bay Road Project — a comprehensive highway system designed to stretch from Cyril E. King Airport to Red Hook on St. Thomas — will break ground early next week.
Public Works Commissioner Darryl Smalls said in a news release that Island Roads has been chosen to handle the first phase of the project. This will include the reconstruction of Centerline Road, the stretch of highway that runs from the V.I. Housing Authority building to Pueblo Supermarket in Long Bay.
Road improvements include the burial of utility lines, the installation of temporary traffic signals and the construction of a box culvert and sidewalk. The box culvert will take waste from eastern Frenchman's Bay to the western side. This will then tie into the waste disposal system built for Havensight Mall that leads directly to the ocean.
Smalls said when contacted Tuesday that the first phase is expected to take about 18 months to complete. He explained that Public Works had to break the project up into three separate phases after the department did not receive proposals from companies willing to undertake the entire project.
The other two components of the project will be put out to bid once the first phase has begun.
We have begun the effort to coordinate this roadway construction work and establish a Maintenance of Traffic Advisory Group in conjunction with the V.I. Police Department so as to keep motorists and area residents informed about progress on the project, Smalls said in the release.
