Monarchs Conquer Yankees 10-8 in AA Baseball

June 15, 2007 — The Monarchs continued their giant killings in the Raphael Jackson AA Baseball league Thursday night, knocking off their second upper echelon team in as many games by beating the second-place Yankees 10-8.
On Sunday the Monarchs scored five runs to storm back from an early four-run deficit to defeat the powerful Mets in the last inning of that game, 8-7.
Batting first in action Thursday at the Paul E. Joseph Stadium, the Monarchs plated two runs against Yankee starter Roberto Soto on RBI singles by Rahsan Foster and Carmello Torres. The Yankees answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Mackeel Rodgers and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Leroy Simmonds Jr. to knot the game at two at the end of one inning.
The Monarchs took the lead for good in the top of the second, scoring two runs on an RBI single off the bat of Kenny Milligan and a wild pitch to lead 4-2 at the end of two innings, after the Yankees failed to score in the bottom of the inning. The Monarchs’ run chased Soto from the mound. The Yankees replaced him with Steve Simmonds, who came on and prevented what could have been a huge inning for the Monarchs.
But the Monarchs roughed Steve Simmonds up in the top of the third. They blew the game wide open by erupting for five runs on a two-run double by Milligan, an RBI single by Javier Velez, a wild pitch and a passed ball to go up 9-2. The Yankees came up with two runs in the bottom of the inning on two solo home runs off the bat of Carlos Morales and Leroy Simmonds Jr. to trail 9-4 after three completed innings of play.
The Monarchs picked up an unearned run in the top of the fourth to complete their scoring for the game and take a 10-4 lead. The Yankees began to make a comeback in the bottom of the inning, scoring two runs to get to within four at 10-6. They scored two runs on an RBI single by Angel Torres and an RBI ground out by Rodgers.
The Yankees scored the two final runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by Torres and Steve Simmonds.
After both teams failed to score in the sixth inning, the game was called by the umpire because of time constraints.
Max Velasquez picked up the win for the Monarchs, while Angel Soto got the loss for the Yankees. Leading the Monarchs offensively were Milligan, 4 for 4 with three RBIs, and Foster, 2 for 4 with one RBI. For the Yankees, Leroy Simmonds Jr. went 1 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs, Carlos Morales 1 for 3 with a home run and one RBI, and Jose Morales 2 for 3.
Mets 12, Vikings 4
In the Wednesday night mid-week game, the Mets knocked off the league-leading Vikings 12-4 behind the five-hit pitching of Nick Collabella. Odingo Davilla got the loss for the Vikings. Leading the Mets attack was Juan Santana, 2 for 4 with two RBIs; Tony Cruz, 2 for 3 with two RBIs; and Ariel Gil, 2 for 3. For the Vikings, Jeff Clark went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Dennis Brow went 2 for 2.
