Feb. 12, 2007 — Members of the St. Croix community are stepping up their efforts to force changes to recent legislation affecting emergency service worker-retirement requirements and benefits by hosting a town meeting from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the D.C. Canegata Ball Park baseball field.
All senators and Gov. John P. deJongh have been invited to attend, according to a recent news release by organizer Gonzalo Rivera. The meeting will center on a discussion about Act 6905, its contents and controversial passage, as well as a request submitted to repeal the act, the release said.
The bill in question was passed by the Senate in late December and subsequently signed into law by then-Gov. Charles W. Turnbull. Over the past few weeks, hundreds of community members have taken to the streets in opposition to some of the bill's more controversial provisions, including sizable pay raises for the governor, lieutenant governor and senators.
The meeting, dubbed "De People Dem Forum," will have several guest speakers, including talk show hosts Mario Moorhead and Roger W. Morgan, WAPA Employees' Association member Hubert Turnbull, Michael Springer, Wahli Whitehead, Rivera and other community activists.
The forum is being held to help educate the community regarding the provisions of the legislation that will negatively impact the community, Rivera said.
