Public Meetings Scheduled on Island's Possible Designation as National Heritage Area

Jan. 19, 2007 — The National Park Service, in conjunction with the Office of the Delegate to Congress, will hold a series of public meetings to educate the St. Croix community on the recently passed congressional legislation that identified and selected St. Croix as a candidate to be studied as a National Heritage Area, according to a DPNR release issued Friday.
The legislation, sponsored by Delegate Donna M. Christensen, became law on Oct. 12, 2006.
According to the release, the public meetings will afford the community an opportunity to understand the purpose of a National Heritage Area, the process of the study, and the benefits to a community of such a designation.
Christensen will make a presentation at the meetings as well as the NPS' Chris Abbett and Suzanne Copping, experts in heritage area studies. Representatives from the State Historic Preservation Office will also participate.
The meetings will be held:
— Thursday, Jan. 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Old Post Office Building in Christiansted (free parking will be available in the Fort’s parking lot);
— Friday, Jan. 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the Main Conference Room at DPNR at #45 Mars Hill, Frederiksted; and
–Saturday, Jan. 27 at 9 a.m. at the National Park Service Visitors Center at Salt River Bay National Historical Park & Ecological Preserve.
