Lakers Take One-Sided Victory in Climactic Junior League Basketball Game

Jan. 14, 2007 — A highly anticipated contest between two undefeated junior-league basketball teams Saturday proved anticlimactic, as the Lakers rolled over Guidance 40-19.
The five games in the Ronald Charles Basketball Association junior league were played in the St. Croix Central High School gym. Two involved teams in the 7-9 age groups, two in the 10-to-12 age group and one in the 13-to-15 age group.
The Lakers-Guidance game was in the 13-to-15 age group and the night's final contest. The Lakers used a stifling man-to-man defense that Guidance was never able to solve for a lopsided victory.
The closest Guidance got to the Lakers was five points when they trailed 10-6 at the end of the first quarter. From then on, intense pressure defense by the Lakers shut down the Guidance offense. The Lakers outscored Guidance 14-6 in the second quarter to go into the locker room at halftime leading by 13 at 24-11.
The Lakers really turned up the defensive pressure in the third quarter. To the amazement of the fans in the gym, they shut out Guidance 9-0 to take a 33-11 lead at the end of three periods. The Lakers finally called off the dogs in the fourth quarter and cruised to victory.
Jonathan Fontanelle had a huge game for the Lakers as he dominated with 15 points, nine rebounds, two steals and five blocks. Teammate Charles Moorehead contributed seven points, 11 rebounds two steals, while Edison Peters added eight points, five rebounds and two steals. For Guidance, the lone bright spot came from Semaj Hodge, who finished with eight points, five rebounds and three steals.
