Dec. 5, 2006 Christmas is coming to Emancipation Garden Dec. 11 with the 11th annual celebration by We From Upstreet.
The events are traditionally held at Roosevelt Park, but because the park is still under renovation, the organization has partnered this year with The Committee To Revive Our Culture to hold the singing, dancing and tree trimming at Emancipation Garden.
Upstreet spokeswoman Yvette Finch said Tuesday that three evenings of Christmas events are planned to welcome the Christmas season this year.
Carolers, dancers and musicians will perform Dec. 11, 12 and 13. The tree-lighting ceremony is Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. with Cliff Finch and Friends in a sing-along. Cliff is my brother, Yvette Finch said. He plays the bass, and he always brings some of his musician friends along to celebrate.
After the tree is officially lighted, the Voices of Love and Party Hardy Caroliers will take up from the sing-along, and fill the evening with song.
Dec. 12 is Youth Night. The Dober Elementary School Choir and St. Andrews Episcopal Church Youth Choir will sing carols, and the Frederick Evangelical Lutheran Church Youth Steel Orchestra will perform.
Dec. 13 is Cultural Dance Night with Milos Kings. The Lockhart Elementary School Quadrille Dancers, the Prophecy Elementary Quadrille Dancers, the Mungo Niles Cultural Dancers and the St. Thomas Heritage Dancers will grab partners and perform the traditional steps. All the events begin at 7 p.m.
Emancipation Garden is already decorated with colorful lights, and the lignum vitae trees are dressed up with the original ornaments made by school children.
Finch invites everyone to come and celebrate and spread the spirit of Christmas, joy, peace and love throughout the community.
Christmas will be officially recognized Wednesday with the arrival of Santa at the Havensight Mall.
Emancipation Garden will host the conclusion of Christmas celebration at 6 a.m. Christmas morning with the 30th annual Challenge of the Carols. (See Carolers Fill the Morning With Holiday Cheer).
