Parsons Dance Company to Entertain at Reichhold on Saturday
New York City's celebrated Parsons Dance Company takes over UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts stage at 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 20. Tickets in the lower and upper uncovered sections are still available for $28 and $18, respectively. In addition to the Reichhold Ticket Office, tickets are available at Modern Music in Havensight and Nisky Center, Parrot Fish, VI Bridal and Tuxedo, the UVI Bookstore and Connections on St. John.
2006 Commencement Programs Posted Online
Congratulations to UVI's 2006 graduates who collectively took home 353 degrees in the May 15 and 16 ceremonies held on the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses, respectively. Online versions of the programs for both campuses have been posted on the Current Events page available from the "Other UVI Sites" menu on the UVI home page – www.uvi.edu. Photos from both commencements will also be posted in the near future.
Sixteen to Receive Early Childhood Education Certificates on St. Croix
UVI's Education Division will award 16 students with certificates in Inclusive Early Childhood Education on the St. Croix campus at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 21. The celebration will be held in the Cafetorium. All members of the community and the UVI family are welcome to celebrate this achievement with the students, their families and faculty.
First UVI Relay for Life Team Meeting Set for May 23 on St. Thomas
The first meeting for UVI's St. Thomas campus 2006 Relay for Life team is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23, in the lobby of the Humanities Building. Persons interested in joining the team are invited to attend. All are invited to bring lunch. Relay for Life, an annual fund raising event for the American Cancer Society, is scheduled for June 24-25 at the Charlotte Amalie High School track. Organizers describe the Relay as a fun-filled, overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs conducted by the American Cancer Society. UVI to Host Best Beginnings Early Childhood Conference May 22-25
The University of the Virgin Islands will host the eighth annual Best Beginnings Early Childhood Conference. Sessions are scheduled for May 22 and 23 on St. Croix, and on May 24 and 25 on St. Thomas. The conference goal is to improve early childhood education in the territory. At the conference government agencies and non-profit organizations will collaborate to provide parents and day care proprietors with professional input on early childhood education. Grant-writing and money matters, the role of parents (specifically fathers) and instructing children with attention deficit disorder will be covered. St. Croix sessions will be held in the Cafetorium from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. On St. Thomas, conference sessions will be held in the Sports and Fitness Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. For details, call 774-0930 extension 4180. The conference is free and open to anyone with an interest in the subject.
VITRAID Offers Assistive Technology Open Houses on St. Croix, St. Thomas
Assistive Technology Open Houses will be offered on St. Croix and St. Thomas, on May 23 and 25, respectively. The events will be hosted by the Virgin Islands Technology Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities (VITRAID) Program. The St. Croix open house will be held at Gertrude's Restaurant. On St. Thomas the event will be held at the Windward Passage Holiday Inn Hotel. Both open houses run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. People with disabilities, service providers, parents and the general public are invited to learn how the lives of people with disabilities can be improved through assistive technology. Carabana Theater to Perform 'Distant Voices' on May 26-27
The Carabana Ensemble Theater Company will present its heralded play "Distant Voices" at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 26, at the University of the Virgin Islands Little Theatre, in association with the UVI Communication Excellence Club. "Distant Voices" is a dramatization of Caribbean Slave Narratives written and compiled by Carabana's Artistic Director Clarence Cuthbertson. It features Savannah Lyons Anthony, Dr. Gilbert Sprauve, Daouud Nydere, Vanessa Olivacce, Afreekan Southwell and Kathleen Pascal. Tickets for this free performance are available at the UVI Bookstore. A second performance is scheduled for 8 p.m. on May 27, at the Gwendolyn Kean-Strength to Strength Cultural Center. Construction Closes Parking at South and North Dorms on St. Thomas Campus
UVI's Office of Capital Projects has announced that, due to construction activities, parking lots for the North and South Dorms on the St. Thomas campus will be closed for much of the summer. The South Dormitory parking lot will be closed beginning Thursday, May 18. All students, staff, faculty and visitors are asked to use the Bookstore parking lot, located above the South Dormitory parking lot, or the Social Science Building parking lot, located across the road.
A project to improve the North Dormitory parking lot will begin on June 1, 2006, and the lot will be closed to all users from that date until further notice. For details, call the Office of Capital Projects at 693-1504.
SBDC Sets Seminar on ADA Compliance for Small Businesses on June 7
A seminar designed to assist small businesses comply with provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7, at UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Training Facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. The seminar is being sponsored by the SBDC in collaboration with the Virgin Islands University Center of Excellence for Developmental Disabilities. Presenter Wilbert Francis will discuss how local businesses can approach ADA compliance in a proactive manner. Admission is $20 at the door. A 50 percent discount is available to individuals who pre-register. UVI students, staff, and faculty with proper ID will be admitted free. Pre-registration, however, is required.
