March 27, 2006 – Senator Neville James remains encouraged with the progress of work on the Ann E. Abramson marine facility dredging.
Senator James visited the work site Monday and spoke with Gordon Finch, VIPA consultant, Jeff Lawler, VIPA senior engineer and Cruzan Divers who are removing piles left from the old pier.
"I am encouraged that the contractor is completing his due diligence in their protection of the environment by relocating live coral from the area and adhering as much as possible to the schedule set by VI Port Authority," Senator James said, adding that dredging equipment was present Monday morning on the pier.
VIPA Executive Director Darlan Brin outlined the dredging schedule at a Feb. 16 Economic Development, Planning and Natural Resources meeting chaired by Senator James.
Senator James said the ongoing work at the Frederiksted pier increases the confidence of the cruise ship industry and demonstrates our efforts to move forward with what is needed to increase daylight passenger ship visits to St. Croix. Senator James also commended the St. Croix Foundation and the Virgin Islands Police department for maintaining and expanding the security camera system on St. Croix.
"These two initiatives are important components toward the revitalization of St. Croix's economy," Senator James concluded.
