UVI Spring Recess Scheduled for March 7-10
The University of the Virgin Islands will observe Spring Recess from Tuesday, March 7 through Friday, March 10. During that time, no classes will be held. UVI administrative offices, however, will observe their normal schedules.
Paiewonsky Library to be Closed to Public During Electrical Upgrade
Due to the continuation of work on electrical system enhancements at UVI's Paiewonsky Library on the St. Thomas campus, the library will be closed to the public from March 7 through 10.
Congratulations to All Who Helped With Afternoon on the Green
Congratulations to all who helped make UVI's 17th Afternoon on the Green a success. The food, contributed by many of the territory's top cooks, and entertainment by Superior Court Rising Stars Steel Orchestra drew a large crowd to the Herman E. Moore Golf Course on UVI's St. Thomas campus on Sunday, March 5. Afternoon on the Green Committee Chair Gail Steele added her thanks to all the front line volunteers for their assistance and effort.
UVI's Lady Bucs Basketball Squad Advances to ODI Tournament
Congratulations to UVI's Lady Bucs basketball squad which downed University of Puerto Rico-Utuado, 53-39, on Saturday, finishing their regular season with a 4-2 record and qualifying for the ODI league's playoffs. Although the UVI Buccaneers men's team won a Friday game against Metropolitan University, their playoff hopes were dashed with the loss of their final season game against UPR-Utuado, 61-58, on Saturday. The Buccaneers ended the season with a 3-6 record. The Lady Bucs are expected to begin postseason play either Thursday or Friday.
UVI Runner Tops Age Group in St. John's 8 Tough Miles Road Race
UVI cross country runner Ealiane Joseph won the 19-and-younger age category in the 8 Tuff Miles road race held Feb. 25 on St. John. Joseph, who is 19, ran the course at an average of 8 minutes and 52 seconds per mile, posting a finish time of one hour, 14 minutes and 21 seconds. She finished tenth among all women runners and won a $1,000 prize. Joseph, a freshman, was the winner of this year's UVI most valuable player award in cross country.
SBDC, First Bank Offer St. Thomas Seminars on Business Credit on March 8
UVI's Small Business Development Center and FirstBank VI will present two free seminars on the uses of business credit on March 8, on St. Thomas. The seminar — titled "Credit – A Key to Empowering Your Business" — will be presented from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 6 to 8 p.m. at the SBDC Training Facility at Nisky Center. The presenters will be Karen Sprauve and Rosa Thomas of FirstBank VI. To pre-register, which is required, call the SBDC office at 776-3206.
MBA Exam Scheduled March 17 at UVI; Registration Deadline Is March 10
UVI's Business Administration Division will offer the MBA Comprehensive Examination from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 17. It will be offered in room 222 of the Sports & Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. On the St. Croix campus the test location is Room U-105. The deadline to register for the exam is Friday, March 10. Applications and review guidelines can be obtained at the Business Administration Division Office. For more information, call 693-1300.
UVI Trustees to Hold Quarterly Meeting on March 11 on St. Croix
The University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees will hold its quarterly meeting on Saturday, March 11, 2006, at 9 a.m. in the Research and Extension Center building on UVI's St. Croix campus. Among the items scheduled to be voted upon include the FY06 Compensation Adjustment Proposal, the proposed construction of a UVI Wellness Center adjacent to the Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus, and the proposal for a Master of Arts in Mathematics Education for Secondary Teachers. Following the public meeting the Board will convene to consider several items in a closed executive session.

Activist Randall Robinson to Present Charter Week Heath Series Lecture
Author and activist Randall Robinson will speak at the University of the Virgin Islands on March 14 as the featured speaker in the Alfred O. Heath Distinguished Speakers Series. His talk, entitled "Race and the Making of U.S. Foreign Policy," will take place at 6 p.m. in Chase Auditorium on the St. Thomas campus and will be videoconferenced to the Melvin Evans Center on St. Croix. The lecture is part of the University's Charter Week activities, will run from March 12 through 18 on UVI's St. Croix and St. Thomas campuses. SOS Program to Bring High School Seniors to St. Thomas Campus
UVI's St. Thomas campus Student Government Association will conduct a Shadow Our Students (SOS) program on March 16, hosting 150 local high school seniors who are potential UVI students. Along with classroom visits, the program will include a Mini College Fair, with displays by UVI units. Details about fair participation are available by calling the Student Activities Office at 693-1111.
Kickball Rematch Pits Students against Faculty/Staff on March 17
A kickball rematch between faculty/staff and student teams is scheduled for UVI's St. Croix campus at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 17. The student team will be attempting to avenge a loss to the faculty/staff squad earlier this semester. The game will be held on the field adjacent to the residence hall. Virgin Islands EPSCoR Program Announces Competition for Incubator Grants
The Virgin Islands Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (VI-EPSCoR) has announced a competition for incubator grants for new research on the bio-complexity of Caribbean coral reefs. The grants, which can be funded up to $25,000, can support pilot research, proposal development and other activities to advance research to the point at which it can attract major funding. Project Co-Director Dr. Meri Whitaker encourages members of the Virgin Islands community, such as those in resource agencies and fisherman's associations, to explore the possibilities these grants offer. Proposals must be received by March 15. Details on the types of research that will be considered and information on how to apply are available on the VI-EPSCoR website at http://epscor.uvi.edu. Successful proposals will be announced on April 3. Project funding will be available immediately. Information is also available from Whitaker by calling 693-1478 or sending email to mwhitak@uvi.edu.
CATS Center Available for Tutoring on St. Thomas Campus
UVI's Campus Advising and Tutorial Services (CATS) Center, formerly the Freshman Center, has announced that renovations to its facilities are completed and tutorial services are now available. The CATS Center offers tutorial services in the following areas: mathematics, biology, chemistry and Spanish. Services are available Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. In addition, The Writing Center is housed within the CATS facilities. The CATS Center is located in Suite 118 of the Classroom Administration Building on the St. Thomas campus. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity for assistance. CLEP Exams Scheduled at UVI's St. Croix and St. Thomas Campuses in March
College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests will be offered on both campuses of the University of the Virgin Islands in March. CLEP tests allow students to earn college credit in a variety of subject areas, including: calculus, college algebra, biology, chemistry, humanities, Spanish, French, business law and computer applica
tions.
— On the St. Croix campus, the tests will be given on Thursday and Friday, March 16 and 17. The deadline to register for the tests is Friday, March 10. Tests will be administered in Evans Center room 304 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information call Francisca Barry in the Academic Services Office at 692-4103.
— On the St. Thomas campus, the tests are scheduled for Thursday, March 23. The deadline to register is Monday, March 13. Tests will be administered in Classroom Administration Building room 103 (the computer lab) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. To register, visit the Campus Advising and Tutorial Services Center (formerly known as Freshman Center) or call Zaida Castro at 693-1220.

St. Croix Campus Spring Ball Set for March 25
UVI's St. Croix Campus annual Spring Ball will be held on Saturday, March 25. The evening's theme is "A Night of Elegance and Beauty in Paris." The ball, which will be held in the Cafetorium, is open to UVI students, faculty and staff. Tickets are $25 per person and are available in the Residence Hall. The ball will start at 7 p.m. For details, call Student Activities Director Clint Ferris at 692-4188.
