Sept. 29, 2005 — Federal grants awarded to local departments and agencies will go toward addressing domestic violence and delinquency intervention efforts, as well as various other advocacy programs.
According to press releases sent Tuesday by Delegate Donna M. Christensen’s office in Washington, D.C., these grants will help fund HIV, substance abuse and other prevention efforts, as well as activities organized by the Law Enforcement Planning Commission.
Grants are:
— $333,902 to the V.I. Department of Health from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration for construction projects.
— $254,320 to the Village Virgin Islands Partners/Recovery from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to support minority substance abuse, HIV and hepatitis prevention efforts.
— $20,000 to the Virgin Islands Advocacy Inc. from the Health Resources and Services Administration to support traumatic brain injury protection and advocacy efforts.
— $42,728 to the Women’s Coalition of St. Croix from the U.S. Justice Department's Office of Violence Against Women to address domestic violence and sexual assault in the territory. According to the release, funds are to promote programs that empower victims of such violence and to educate people about domestic violence and assault.
Three grants totaling $209,000 have been awarded to the local LEPC from the federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention to support delinquency prevention and intervention efforts, as well as for juvenile justice support programs.
Representatives in Christensen’s offices could not provide information as to when the grant money will be available for use by these departments and agencies, or by what date the money has to be expended.
