UVI to Host PRAXIS Teacher Certification Exams
The University of the Virgin Islands will conduct the PRAXIS teacher certification examinations on its St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses on Saturday, August 6.
– St. Thomas test times are as follows: Session I — 7:30 a.m.; Session II — 10:30 a.m. The exams will be administered in the Classroom Administration building room 302.
– St. Croix test times are as follows: (August 6) Session I — 7:30 a.m.; Session II — 10:30 a.m. The exams will be administered in Evans Center 207. Additionally, PRAXIS exams will be offered on St. Croix on August 8 with the same time and location schedule.
Individuals must pre-register for PRAXIS exams with the Educational Testing Service. Information and registration is available at the Educational Testing Service web site or by calling 1-800-772-9476. Future PRAXIS exams and their registration deadlines in parentheses are as follows: Sept. 17 (registration-closed); November 19 (September 20); Jan. 7, 2006 (Nov. 8, 2005); March 4, 2006 (Jan. 1, 2006).
Reichhold's Youth Moviemaking Workshop Premieres 'Dear Diary' August 6
Students enrolled in the fifth annual Youth Moviemaking Workshop at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts will premiere a short feature film titled "Dear Diary" at 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 6 at the center. The workshop is a seven-week summer program that gives students hands-on experience in all aspects of movie production. It is supported in large part by a grant from the Virgin Islands Law Enforcement Planning Commission.
Saturday's premiere, which will be accompanied by silent movies, music video clips, public service announcements and short stories created during the workshop's first four weeks, is free and open to the public. For details, contact Program Coordinator Denise Humphrey at 693-1550.
UVI Sets Volleyball Camp with U.S. National Youth Coach August 7-10
UVI will host Ken Shibuya of the U.S. Youth National Volleyball Team coaching staff at an advanced volleyball camp for males from August 7 through10 at UVI's Sports and Fitness Center on the St. Thomas campus. The camp, which costs $65, is geared towards advanced volleyball players ages 12-24. Camp registration is scheduled at 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 7, at the Sports and Fitness Center. Preceding the registration, a "volleyball rumble" featuring four-person co-ed teams from the VI community will begin at 2 p.m. Admission for spectators is free. UVI Libraries Awarded Prestigious IMLS Grant
Thanks to a $952,000 grant from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the University of the Virgin Islands Libraries, in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh, will play a pivotal role in addressing the current shortage of professional librarians and educating the next generation of librarians for the Territory. Oliver Samuels & Company to Perform in Virgin Islands August 12 – 14
Oliver Samuels and Company return to the Virgin Islands with presentations of Patrick Brown's new comedy "Ras Noah and the Hawk" at Island Center on St. Croix on August 12 and at UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts on August 13 and 14. "Ras Noah and The Hawk" is a Jamaican comedy loosely based on the biblical story of Noah and the ark. Showtime is 8 p.m. For tickets contact the Reichhold Center's Ticketing Services at 693-1559. Admission for the St. Croix show will be $25. At the Reichhold Center, tickets will be $35 for covered-section seats and $25 for uncovered-section seats. Free Workshop on Diabetes Scheduled August 16 on St. Thomas
A free workshop on diabetes will be offered on St. Thomas from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 16, at the UVI Small Business Development Center's Nisky Center training facility. The workshop is offered by UVI's Cooperative Extension Service 4-H/Family and Consumer Sciences Program and the V.I. Department of Health Bureau of Nutrition Services. Participants will learn how much starchy food a diabetic can eat, how to determine serving sizes for starchy foods, how to count carbohydrates, and how to read nutrition food labels.
