August 1, 2005- Castle Burke resident Matthew Jordan, 25, was arrested Saturday morning after shooting friend Burton Payne, 38, multiple times, then setting him and his car on fire.
According to Deputy Police Chief Herminio Velazquez, police were alerted to the situation around 4:08 a.m. Saturday morning after concerned St. Croix residents found a distressed Payne lying on the road near Kingshill Cemetery.
"An ambulance was summoned, and Payne was picked up and taken to the Juan F. Luis hospital, where police had an opportunity to question him," Velazquez said.
Payne told police that he and Jordan had a "rendezvous" in the area. "However, Payne said that when he got there, Jordan shot him, then set Payne and his vehicle on fire," Velazquez said.
A resident of Marley Projects on St. Croix, Payne sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head area, and has been transported to Puerto Rico for further medical attention.
Jordan was arrested around 11:30 p.m. on Saturday and charged with assault, possession of a dangerous weapon, and arson. His bail has been set at $75,000.
