July 29, 2005 – Friday afternoon's rain, lightning and thunder set the stage for more of the same on Saturday.
"It's just a tropical wave coming through, but a very vigorous one," Walter Snell, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in San Juan, said at 5 p.m. Friday.
He said it should "blow through" on Saturday.
Snell said that while the tropical wave could become a tropical depression, it's unlikely it will happen while it's over the Virgin Islands.
"But they're watching it for the states," he said.
He said there are a couple of other tropical waves making their way across the Atlantic Ocean, but none have shown signs of development so far.
Tropical Storm Franklin, which formed over the Bahamas on July 21, is racing off to the northeast at 25 mph, with winds of 40 mph. Neither it nor Tropical Storm Gert, which developed July 23 in the Gulf of Mexico, posed any threat to the Virgin Islands.
The next named storm will be designated Harvey.
Hurricane season runs until Nov. 30.
