Tourism Reps Promote the V.I. in NYC

May 4, 2005 – Commissioner of Tourism Pamela C. Richards is pleased to report that Assistant Commissioner of Tourism, Monique Sibilly-Hodge and representatives of the United States Virgin Islands hotel industry will participate in International POW WOW May 3-7, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City.
The 37th annual International POW WOW, the travel industry's premier international marketplace, offers three days of intensive pre-scheduled business appointments. More than 1,000 U.S. travel organizations from across the country, and more than 1,500 International and Domestic Buyers, conduct negotiations that result in the generation of over $3 billion in future U.S. travel, according to a Tourism release.
"We had the opportunity to highlight the U.S. Virgin Islands' beautiful beaches and distinctive cultures at International POW WOW last year, when attendance of international and domestic journalists reached a record high," Richards stated. "This year, we plan to do even more to promote the multi-national appeal which has been culturally influenced by the five different nations who owned the islands prior to their purchase by the United States."
International POW WOW expects to attract over 5,500 visitors who will be exposed to the more than 70 countries represented at the show. In keeping with the show's tradition of closing with a high-profile speaker, former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell will address the attendees of the lunch being held on Saturday, May 7.
