Focus Fund Making a Difference at Central High

March 16, 2005 – The St. Croix Foundation announced the completion of a renovated, handicap accessible girls bathroom at St. Croix Central High School. Funded by donations from The March Group, the project represents one of several projects the company has undertaken since adopting the high school in 2003.
Through the establishment of a fund entitled "Focus CHS," the March Group, in partnership with the St. Croix Foundation, has spent the past year identifying and addressing some of the critical needs of St. Croix’s oldest public high school.
According to a press from St. Croix Foundation, Dr. Steven Hardee, former partner of The March Group, was so moved after touring the campus that he immediately made a donation of a $20,000. Several other March Group partners added additional contributions.
According to Perry Sheraw, Focus CHS project director, Hardee directed his funds to work on the girls' bathroom on the campus after weighing all the needs of the school and upon the recommendation of Kent Moorehead, CHS principal. "As a public high school graduate from Mississippi, Dr. Hardee believed students should, at the very least, be provided with the basic necessities of clean bathroom facilities," stated Sheraw.
Facility improvements are one of the requirements for re-accreditation by the Middle States Association. The March Group, according to the press release, saw its involvement with CHS as a way to encourage the private sector to become involved in the re-accreditation efforts of Central High.
In total, 11 boys and girls bathrooms received facelifts with paint and minor repairs. One girl's bathroom received a complete and dramatic renovation, which included new tiles, new stalls, new fixtures, toiletry dispensers and upgraded plumbing. That bathroom was also retrofitted in compliance with the American Disabilities Act — the only such facility on the campus. Contractor Roger Kainth contributed toilet paper and paper towels to the school once the project was completed in late February.
In addition to renovating the bathrooms, The March Group also funded the enclosure of the school's audio-video lab to cut noise to the adjoining library.
