UVI Slates Community Meeting on Wind Turbine Plans
UVI is poised to become one of the first universities in the world to incorporate an on-campus wind turbine to generate a substantial portion of its electrical power. While remaining a customer of the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (WAPA), the proposed system will permit the electricity generated by a wind turbine to reduce the amount of power presently supplied by WAPA. A series of community meetings is being scheduled to exchange information and to entertain questions and/or concerns from community members.
The first community meeting is scheduled for noon on Thursday, Feb. 24, in Room 101 of the Teacher Education Building on the St. Thomas campus. The second community meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. on on Tuesday, March 1, in the Sports and Fitness Center. More information is available in a news release on the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu.
Feb. 22 VI-EPSCoR Science Lecture to Focus on Iraq's Embattled Marshlands
Prospects for restoring southern Iraq's marshlands will be the topic of the next VI-EPSCoR science lecture scheduled at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 22. The guest speaker will be Dr. Nasseer Idrisi, the VI-EPSCoR BioComplexity of Caribbean Coral Reef research assistant professor in biological oceanography. The lecture will be presented in Chase Auditorium (B-110) on the St. Thomas campus with a videoconferenced link to Evans Center room 713 on the St. Croix campus.
The lecture's title is: "Iraq-Advancing Watershed Assessment, Research, and Education (AWARE): Restoring the southern Iraqi marshlands after a decade of devastation." The 2005 EPSCoR lecture series is free and open to the public. It continues at noon on Tuesdays through April 26. In the lectures, UVI and visiting scientists present results from their original research. The series is presented by the VI-Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program. Son of Civil Rights Icon Rev. Ralph Abernathy to Speak at UVI Feb. 23
The Reverend Ralph David Abernathy III, eldest son of American civil rights leader the Rev. Ralph Abernathy, Sr., will make a Black History Month presentation at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 23, in the Sports and Fitness Center on UVI's St. Thomas campus. Abernathy is a former Georgia state senator and serves as an associate pastor at the West Hunter Baptist Church in Atlanta. His presentation, which is free, will cover the civil rights movement, giving a new voice and vision to the legacy of this important movement. In his personal journey, from sit-ins to the senate, from prison to the pulpit and back, Abernathy connects the past to the present in a manner that only one who has truly lived it can.
A question and answer session will follow his presentation, with a book signing to follow. The event will be videotaped by Public Television – WTJX. For further information, contact the Student Activities Office at 693-1111.
2005 Water Resources Conference Scheduled Feb. 24 on St. Thomas Campus
UVI's Virgin Islands Water Resources Research Institute (WRRI), in collaboration with VI-EPSCoR, will sponsor the 2005 Water Resources Conference from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24, at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center. Presentations will be based on research projects that were funded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) through WRRI. In addition, local government agencies having water resources responsibilities will participate in this conference.
A major conference objective is for participants to become better acquainted with ongoing and planned water resources activities in the territory. The conference is free and open to the public. Pictorial Exposition 'My Journey to Ghana' Scheduled Feb. 25 on St. Croix
A pictorial exposition titled "My Journey to Ghana" by photographer Dr. Denise Bennerson will be presented at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25 in the Cafetorium of UVI's St. Croix campus. The event is part of ongoing Black History Month Activities sponsored by the St. Croix Student Activities Office. Dr. Bennerson will showcase photos she took while visiting Ghana. She will also describe how she celebrated her birthday with an entire village.

'UVI's Greenwater Fish Culture' System to be Topic of Free Workshop
UVI's Aquaculture Program staff will present a free, public workshop on building and operating a greenwater fish culture tank from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Research and Extension Center on the St. Croix campus. The workshop's title is "How to Build and Operate a UVI Greenwater Fish Culture Tank, an Income Opportunity for Farmers." It will cover the principles of greenwater fish farming using a system developed by the UVI Aquaculture Program.
All aspects of operating a commercial-scale fish farming operation, including its incorporation into a diversified farming business, will be covered. The session will take place in Room 133 of the Research and Extension Center and include a tour of the program's facilities. Freddie McGregor and Inner Visions to perform at Reichhold March 5
Reggae artists Freddie McGregor and Inner Visions will perform at the Reichhold Center for the Arts at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 5. Internationally acclaimed, McGregor has enjoyed more than 40 successful years in the music business and is considered Jamaica's most consistent recording artist. VIUCEDD Offers Presentation on Famous African Americans with Disabilities
UVI's Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence on Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD), in celebration of Black History Month, has developed a presentation entitled, "Honoring our History: Celebrating the Spectrum of Our Abilities." The presentation highlights famous African Americans with disabilities who have made significant contributions to society.
Notable individuals such as Grammy Award winner Ray Charles, Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, actor and humanitarian Danny Glover and Underground Railroad organizer Harriet Tubman are a few of the people who have influenced the culture in various ways, proving that "attitudes are the real disabilities." The presentation can be viewed from the home page of the UVI web site – www.uvi.edu.

St. Croix Freshman Jeopardy Challenge Set Feb. 23
The fourth biannual Freshman Jeopardy Challenge on UVI's St. Croix campus is scheduled for 12:15 to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb, 23in the Cafetorium. The Challenge features a showdown between students taking Science100 and Social Science 100. A total of 50 questions will be offered in 10 categories. Spectators are welcome.

UVI St. Croix Campus Schedules CLEP Tests Feb. 23-25
Students registered to take the February round of College Level Examinations Program (CLEP) tests on UVI's St. Croix campus are reminded of the following test dates: Feb. 23 — 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; Feb. 24 — 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; and Feb. 25 — 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. All tests will be conducted in Melvin Evans Center room 304.
Another round of CLEP tests will be conducted on the St. Croix campus in March, with the specific date to be announced. For details call the Academic Services Office at 692-4103.
Feb. 25 Is Deadline to Sign-up for CLEP Testing on St. Thomas Campus
Friday, Feb. 25, is the deadline to sign up for College Level Examinations Program (CLEP) tests scheduled for March 24 on UVI's St. Thomas campus. CLEP tests are computer-based examinations designed to allow students to earn college credit in a wide variety of subjects. The complete subject list is included in the 2004-2005 UVI Catalog (pp. 27-28). There is a $55 fee per examination, with an additional $10 fee for any tests requiring essays. There is also a $15 processing fee. Registration is offered in UVI's Division of Enrollment Management Office on the second floor of the Classroom/Administration (CA) building on the St. Thomas campus. For details call 693-1152.

The University of the Virgin Islands has joined more than 27 other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the nation to help make homeownership a reality for its graduates. UVI's St. Thomas Campus Sets Spring Open House for March 11
The St. Thomas campus of the University of the Virgin Islands will conduct its Spring Open House from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 11, in the Sports and Fitness Center. The event will provide high school students and adult learners from the St. Thomas/St. John District an in-depth look at UVI's diverse educational opportunities, as well as detailed information on housing, financial aid, counseling and placement, career opportunities and student activities. Guidance counselors and principals at all St. Thomas and St. John high schools, as well as the Department of Education's two adult education programs, have sign-up sheets for the open house. Parents are also encouraged to attend. Program highlights include:
— Academic overviews — opportunities to speak with instructors and division chairs about potential majors
— Program overviews — covering the National Student Exchange and early admission engineering and medical school programs

UVI Humanities Opens Poetry, Short Story Contests; Deadline March 24
The University of the Virgin Islands Humanities Division has announced poetry and short story contests to be held in conjunction with its 2005 Humanities Festival. The theme of the festival, which will run April 3 through 9, is "Focus on the Folk: Virgin Islands Arts and Culture." Adults and students from the entire Virgin Islands community are eligible. Prizes for the best poems and short stories will be awarded in four categories: Caribbean Grade School, Caribbean High School, Caribbean College and Caribbean Community.
Participants should submit stories and poems with the title only on the manuscript. On a separate sheet, submit your name, mailing and e-mail address, and telephone number, along with category of entry and title of poem(s)/story(stories). No manuscripts will be returned; only winners will be notified. Poetry winners will have the opportunity to read their work on the St. Croix campus on April 6. UVI Offering Five-Week Study Abroad Summer Program in Valencia, Spain
UVI's Humanities Division is organizing a five-week summer study abroad program in Spain's third-largest city, Valencia. The trip is planned for May 14 to June 18, 2005. Students can earn UVI credits while learning about the Spanish language and way of life. Participants will live in the home of a Spanish host-family. Three meals a day, a bed and laundry are included. Two hours per day — Monday through Thursday — of classroom study are scheduled.
The program is offered to students of UVI. And, with open enrollment, anyone can sign up. The group size is limited to 10, and individuals are encouraged to sign up soon. UVI-CELL Offers New Home Health Aide Training Course
The University of the Virgin Islands Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center is offering a new Home Health Aide training course that will prepare students to take the certification exam to become a USVI Certified Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide (CNA/HHA). The course will be offered March 15 though May 28 in St. Croix. (A course in St. Thomas is scheduled to begin May 10.) The class will meet 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The course fee of $875 includes a book and medical kit.
During the 120-hour course, students will learn how to provide safe and effective care to their patients, while assisting the care team in achieving patient goals. The course will cover: the nuts and bolts of home health care; care skills, including blood pressures; safety, infection control and emergencies; adult and
geriatric populations; care delivery practice; end of life issues; practice exams; and clinical experience.
Entrance requirements for the course include: a minimum age of 18 years, a high school diploma or GED, a health certificate by a VI licensed physician or nurse practitioner, complete immunization profile, and TB screen or chest X-ray medical report.

International Computer Driving License (ICDL) Pilot Program
The new Syllabus v4-ICDL certification test is now available for the initial pilot testing. The upgraded program reflects current information technology principles and terminology that have been adopted as standards since the release ICDL program. ICDL is a globally recognized training and certification program which validates fundamental computer skills. The ICDL program covers seven areas for certification: Windows, Basic Information Technology, Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, and Internet/Email. Interested persons are urged to take advantage of the pilot program. Once the pilot program is complete, fees will revert back to the original price of $595.

Human Resource Certification

OSHA 510: Standards for Construction Industry
This course provides an introduction to OSHA policies, procedures, and standards, as well as construction safety and health principles.
