Calypso and Queen Events Mark This Weekend

Dec. 15, 2004 – The Crucian Christmas Festival is starting to swing with its name – “Sashay to the Rhythm of Our Cultural Vibes for Festival 2004-2005." On Friday, the Calypso Monarch finalists will be chosen and Sunday will see the selection of a festival queen. The complete schedule of events is below.
Four young ladies are competing Sunday to determine who will reign over the Crucian Christmas Festival. The queen show is at 5 p.m. at the Island Center for the Performing Arts. Organizers say it will be packed with excitement as local performers take to the stage.
The contestants are Ivyliss Davis, a 17-year old Good Hope School student; Jeneisha John, a 17-year-old Education Complex student; Kristi Kriger, a 17-year-old Education Complex student; and Temisha Libert a 17-year-old Adult Education student.
This is the first major pageant for Davis who said the pageant allows her to meet new people and be a positive role model for young ladies.
John is a the 2004 Miss VI Pride. Competing allows her to highlight her speaking talents and represent the Virgin Islands in a positive light. She also looks forward to traveling to other Caribbean islands as an ambassador for the Virgin Islands.
Krieger won the Miss Jabberwock pageant in 1997. She plans a career in midwifery and said if she wins the crown she will devote some of her time to youth organizations on St. Croix.
Libert said this pageant has been a long-time dream for her, but a medical condition she's had since birth almost prevented her from competing. Libert has scoliosis and a recent operation corrected a curvature of her spine. She transferred from the St. Croix Education Complex to Adult Education because her condition caused her to miss school often. She said her improved posture; increased confidence and parents' support will help her make the most of this opportunity.
Suzette James, pageant organizer, assured the public the show will begin promptly. "I have to go to work the next day and a lot of other people do also," James said.
Tickets for the queen show are on sale at Pancho's in Sunny Isles, Pier 69 in Frederiksted and Zinny's II in Christiansted. Prices are $20 and $25 at the door. Bleacher seats are
$10.
